UGC marketing for brands, and how to get reels that actually sell

By the Viewzar team
In short

UGC marketing means getting real people to make short, phone-shot videos about your product and using them in your feed, your ads and your product pages. The reels that sell open on a specific problem, show the product working in someone's hands within seconds, give one reason to believe and sound like a real buyer. You can source them from customers, from paid UGC creators, or from creators who post on their own accounts and are paid per verified view.

UGC marketing for brands means getting real people to make short, phone-shot videos about your product, then putting those videos where buyers make up their minds, in the feed, in ads and on product pages. The reels that actually sell follow a pattern. They open on a specific problem, show the product working in someone's hands within seconds, give one reason to believe, and sound like a person your buyer would trust.

Get the brief right and you can source those reels three ways, from customers, from paid UGC creators, or from creators who post on their own accounts and are paid per view, the model Viewzar (which publishes this blog) is built on.

This guide is for founders and marketers at Indian D2C brands, local businesses and startups. It covers sourcing, a brief template, the second-by-second anatomy of a selling reel, costs and measurement. If you are a creator who wants to make UGC, read how to become a UGC creator in India instead.

What is UGC marketing?

UGC stands for user-generated content. It started as whatever customers posted unprompted, an unboxing, a mirror selfie in a new kurta, a review. In marketing today it means three different things, and mixing them up is how brands overpay.

  • Organic UGC: what customers post without being paid. Free, credible and impossible to schedule.
  • Paid UGC: creators paid a fee to make videos that you post on your handle, run as ads or add to product pages. Their followers do not matter.
  • Creator-posted UGC: creators make original reels about your product and post them from their own accounts, so you get the content and the reach.

UGC is not the same as influencer marketing. With an influencer, you are renting an audience. With UGC, you are buying content and, in the creator-posted version, views. If renting audiences is what you need, our guide to micro-influencer marketing in India covers it.

Why UGC reels sell when polished ads don't

  • They look like the feed. People open Instagram to watch people. A reel that looks like a person talking earns the second look a studio ad often loses.
  • They show the product in use. Texture on a wrist, the sizzle in a kadhai, the fit on a real body. That is exactly what an online buyer cannot check.
  • They answer objections in a buyer's words. "Does it leave a white cast?" "Will a 15-inch laptop fit?" Creators ask what your customers ask.
  • They give you volume. Twenty creators means twenty angles, so you stop guessing which message works.
  • They suit how Reels are shown. Instagram has said that watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach matter for Reels, and that it favours original content over reposts. An original reel built around a real moment is the kind of content that can earn those signals.

Your brand does not need one perfect video. It needs twenty honest ones, so the market can tell you which message sells.

Three ways to get UGC for your brand in India

Source What you get How you pay Best for Watch out for
Customers Reviews, unboxings, tags Free, or a small reward Social proof Low volume, uneven quality
Paid UGC creators Files you post or run as ads A fixed fee per video Ad creative, listing videos You pay whether it works or not, then pay again to show it
Creator-posted, pay per view Reels on creators' accounts, plus reach A rate per 1,000 views Awareness and testing many angles Your brief must work for creators you have not met

Customer UGC: ask at the right moment

  • Put a card in every box offering ₹100 off the next order for a reel that tags you.
  • Send a WhatsApp message a week after delivery, once the product has had time to work, asking for a 15-second video.
  • Ask permission in writing before reposting, and credit the customer. Permission to repost is not permission to run it as a paid ad.

This costs almost nothing, which makes it the right first step if you are working with the tight budgets covered in how to market your brand on a small budget.

This route suits ad testing and listing videos on Amazon, Flipkart or your own site. Agree on deliverables, raw files, extra hook versions, how long you may run the video as an ad, and revisions before anyone shoots. The cost is fixed per video, so a flop costs as much as a hit.

Creator-posted UGC, paid per view

You publish a brief with a rate per 1,000 views. Creators post original reels from their own accounts, and you pay for the views those reels actually get. Distribution comes built in, and you learn which angles work from real views before you spend on ads.

This is how Viewzar works. The trade-off is that you approve reels instead of hand-picking people, so the brief has to do the work.

The anatomy of a UGC reel that sells

Seconds Job What it looks like
0 to 2 Hook The problem or a striking visual, product visible if possible
2 to 7 Problem The specific situation your buyer recognises
7 to 20 Product in use Hands, close-ups, the moment it works
20 to 27 Proof Before and after, old way versus new, a visible result
27 to 30 Push One soft call to action, a code or "link in bio"

Here is that structure as a script for a hypothetical ₹449 cold-pressed coconut hair oil from a small Kerala brand.

  • 0 to 2 seconds: the creator holds up two shampoo bottles. On-screen text reads "Hair oil that doesn't need two washes?"
  • 2 to 7 seconds: "My nani swears by oiling. I hated how heavy most oils felt, and washing them out twice."
  • 7 to 20 seconds: warming the oil in a katori, a close-up of the texture, massaging it in. "It's cold-pressed, so it actually smells like fresh coconut."
  • 20 to 27 seconds: bottle and label in frame. "Light enough that one shampoo washes it out. That's why I've stuck with it."
  • 27 to 30 seconds: "Code's in my caption if you want to try it."

Notice what it does not do. It makes no medical claim, it never mentions a competitor, and its proof is something the creator can honestly say.

UGC formats that work in India, by category

Category Format Example hook
Skincare Problem and solution, 7-day test "Oily skin, Chennai humidity, and a sunscreen that doesn't melt by noon?"
Food and snacks Recipe using the product "Restaurant-style paneer tikka at home in 10 minutes"
Fashion Try-on, three ways to style "One kurta, three looks, office to sangeet"
Home and kitchen Before and after "My kitchen counter before and after this ₹599 organiser"
Tech accessories Unboxing and stress test "Can a ₹999 neckband survive a Mumbai local commute?"
Fintech apps Explainer from daily life "How I split rent with flatmates without awkward reminders"
Local café POV visit "POV, you found the quietest café in Indiranagar to work from"

Regional language reels belong in every plan. If your buyers are in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat or Bengal, brief creators who speak to them in Tamil, Gujarati or Bengali.

How to write a UGC brief that gets selling reels

Copy this template and fill every line.

PRODUCT AND PRICE: [name], [₹ price], [where to buy]
WHO IT IS FOR: [one sentence, e.g. working women 25-40 with frizzy hair]
THE ONE PROBLEM IT SOLVES: [one sentence]
KEY MESSAGE: [the one thing a viewer should remember]

MUST SHOW
1. Product label clearly visible at least once
2. Product in use, not just held
3. [the specific result or moment]

MUST NOT
1. Claims we cannot back ("cures", "permanent", "doctor approved")
2. Competitor names or logos
3. [anything unsafe for your category]

PROOF POINTS YOU MAY SAY: [only substantiated facts]
TONE: [e.g. honest, warm, a little funny, never salesy]
FORMAT: 20 to 45 seconds, vertical, captions on, original audio
CAPTION MUST INCLUDE: #ad, @[brandhandle], [discount code]
HOOK IDEAS (OPTIONAL): [two or three, as inspiration, not a script]
WE WILL REJECT A REEL IF: [checkable items only]

Three habits make briefs work.

  • Write rejection rules as facts anyone can check. "Label visible" and "#ad in the first line" are checkable. Taste is not, and on pay-per-view platforms you can only reject against what you wrote.
  • Explain the why. "Show the texture, because buyers worry it's sticky" gets better footage than "show texture".
  • One message per reel. Three messages in 30 seconds means none of them land.

What does UGC cost in India?

There is no honest single price, because it depends on the model. What you can do is compare every option on one number, the effective cost per 1,000 views.

Effective cost per 1,000 views = what you paid ÷ views × 1,000

Hypothetical option You pay Views Effective cost per 1,000 views
Fixed-fee creator post that flops ₹30,000 3,000 ₹10,000
The same post if it does well ₹30,000 60,000 ₹500
Pay per view at ₹40 per 1,000 Only verified views Whatever arrives ₹40

A fixed fee leaves all the risk with you, because you find out what you bought after you have paid. With pay per view, the price of a view is fixed, so a reel that flops costs little or nothing. Your maximum reach is budget ÷ rate × 1,000, so ₹50,000 at ₹40 per 1,000 buys up to 12,50,000 verified views.

Paid UGC files work differently. You pay to make the video, then pay again in ad spend to show it to anyone. Our guide to measuring influencer marketing ROI takes these sums further.

How to measure whether your UGC is working

  • Reels on creators' accounts: verified views, shares and saves, comments asking for the price or link, profile visits, code redemptions per creator, and sales during the campaign against the weeks before it.
  • UGC run as ads: how many people watch past three seconds, how many watch to the end, click-through rate and cost per purchase, all in Meta's Ads Manager. Compare hooks and creators, not just ads.
  • The loop: brief 10 to 20 creators with varied angles, find the two or three reels that clearly win, license them as ads, and write the next brief around what won.

How to get UGC reels on Viewzar and pay only for verified views

Viewzar is a pay-per-view creator marketplace for India, and its UGC campaigns follow the creator-posted model above, on Instagram Reels. A campaign runs like this.

  1. Load a prepaid rupee wallet. There is no subscription and no listing fee.
  2. Create a UGC campaign. Write the brief, set a rate per 1,000 verified views (at least ₹10) and a budget (at least ₹10,000).
  3. Creators book it. Creators in matching niches book your campaign. You do not pick them one by one, which is why a brief like the one above matters so much.
  4. Approve or reject each reel against your written brief within 48 hours. Silence counts as approval.
  5. Pay only for verified views on reels you approved. Views come from Instagram's own data for each creator's account, are checked for fraud (bots, bought views) and are counted for 30 days or until the campaign ends. A reel below 1,000 verified views costs nothing.

Unspent money stays in your wallet, and your own money can be refunded within 30 days of a top-up. When a reel clearly wins, you can license it to run as your ad for a fixed ₹5,000. Local businesses can target a city, so the campaign goes to creators with at least 30% of their audience there. The help guides on creating a campaign and licensing a reel cover each step.

It fits D2C brands, local businesses and podcasters who want many reels, real reach and spend that moves only with verified views. It does not fit if you want to hand-pick one specific creator, need YouTube or other platforms (it is Instagram Reels only for now), or sell something that cannot be shown honestly in a reel. If it fits, start a campaign on Viewzar.

Rights, disclosure and claims

  • Disclosure. ASCI requires paid content to be labelled, for example with #ad or #collab, placed upfront. Put the label in your brief. ASCI's site publishes the current rules.
  • Claims. Creators repeat what your brief allows, so allow only what you can substantiate. Health, beauty, food and finance claims deserve extra care.
  • Usage. Permission to repost is not permission to run an ad. Get ad rights in writing, for a set period.
  • Music. Trending tracks in a creator's reel may not be cleared for business use or ads. If you plan to run a reel as an ad, ask for original audio or a voiceover.

The bottom line

UGC works when you treat it as a testing system, not a one-off shoot. Write one sharp brief, get many creators' takes on it, let real views tell you which message sells, then put ad money behind the winners. Paying per verified view on Viewzar is one way to run that loop without paying for reels nobody watched.

Frequently asked questions

What is UGC marketing in simple words?

UGC marketing is using short videos and photos made by real people, customers or paid creators, to sell your product. The content looks like a normal person made it on a phone, which is why it blends into the feed and feels more believable than a studio ad.

Is UGC better than influencer marketing?

They do different jobs. Influencer marketing rents an audience that trusts a specific person, while UGC buys content, and sometimes views, that you can test and reuse. A sensible order is to use UGC to find the message that works, then build your influencer marketing plan around it.

How much does UGC cost in India?

It depends on the model. Customer UGC is nearly free, paid UGC creators charge a fixed fee per video plus extra for ad rights, and pay-per-view campaigns charge a rate per 1,000 verified views. Compare options on effective cost per 1,000 views rather than price per video.

How do I get UGC for my brand with no budget?

Start with customers. Put a card in every order offering a small discount for a tagged reel, follow up on WhatsApp a week after delivery, and always ask permission before reposting. Once you have a small budget, test a pay-per-view campaign so you pay only for views that happen.

Can I run a creator's reel as a paid ad?

Only with the creator's permission for that specific use and period, because permission to repost is not permission to advertise. Agree ad rights in writing and check that the audio is cleared for ads. On Viewzar, you can license an approved reel as an ad for a fixed ₹5,000.

How does Viewzar charge for UGC campaigns?

You load a prepaid wallet, set a rate per 1,000 verified views and a budget, and pay only for verified views on reels you approved. There is no subscription or listing fee, reels that never reach 1,000 views cost nothing, and unspent money stays in your wallet. You review every reel against your brief, as the guide to approving reels explains.
